If you are a collector of special and truly old religious artefacts then this one of a kind crucifix could be the one for you. This crucifix was one of the prized possessions of a Dutch collector that passed on some three years ago. Via his relatives we were able to purchase a large part of his collection. Many of the items we have already sold via 1stdibs and they are again being enjoyed and worshipped in churches, monasteries and private homes around the globe. This unique crucifix is actually made in two time periods. The oak base and the cross were made in the mid 1800s. They are all hand-crafted and hand-carved out of solid oak only. We believe that this base and cross were specifically made for the amazing and ancient boxwood sculptures of Jesus, Mother Mary and Saint John the Baptist. We have conservatively dated the boxwood sculptures as being mid 1700s, but they could even be 17th century. These types of crucifixes with the ancient and quality carved boxwood sculptures are getting ever harder to find and the original ones are mostly church or museum owned. Over the centuries some repairs were done to the sculpture of Christ. Especially where the arms are connected to the body and where the feet connect to the legs. Also on both hands a few fingers are missing. On both hands of Mary three (pieces of) fingers are missing. Saint John however, looks to be in mint condition and that is like a minor miracle. There also is a wooden chip missing on the INRI sign. With the age taken into account we are still very confident in saying that this unique and large crucifix is in good to very good condition. The beautiful base comes with a number of top quality carvings, but the ancient boxwood sculptures really are what takes this church relic to the next level. Their look and feel and their patina is among the best we have ever seen and together they give even more weight to the profound meaning of this crucification and how it impacted so many lives over the course of time.
