These handcrafted and meaningful 19th century church relics portray the so called ‘Arma Christi’ or ‘Instruments of the Passion’. The objects that are hand carved and hand painted inside the Baroque shields in the center of each panel, are all associated with the Passion of Jesus Christ. In Christian symbolism and art they are seen as arms in the sense of heraldry, and also as the weapons Christ used to achieve his conquest over Satan. There are about 20 different objects that are frequently used in Christian art. Inside these, one inch thick, deeply carved Baroque Revival shields are six of those objects. Going from left to right, in image number one of this listing you can first see the scourge used for the 39 lashes and the reed which was placed in Jesus’ hand as a sceptre in mockery. In the second shield there are the hand carved crown of thorns and the nails that inflicted the wounds on the hands and feet of Christ. Finally, on the right is the panel with the hammer used to drive the nails into Jesus’ hands and feet and the pincers used to remove the nails. Unfortunately we don’t know from which church these amazing panels originate, because the former owner/collector is no longer with us. What we do know is that these meaningful Christian works of art are extremely rare, very well made and in very good condition given their age. Thanks to the metal hooks on the back (that were put on in the 20th century) mounting these gilt and hand painted oakwooden panels is child’s play. If you already have a space in mind for these unique antiques then maybe you should be their next custodian.
If you like their unicity, beauty, deeper meaning, quality and great condition as much as we do then you will love our price.
