A Baroque style French walnut bracket with hand-carved putti, circa 1800. Born during the tumultuous years of the early 19th century, this French bracket features a semi-circular shaped top, adorned with an ivy carved molding. It it the base, however, that captures all the attention, with its Baroque style depiction of two chubby putti, finely carved in high relief. One seems to be grabbing the other, in a movement that is not without reminiscing of Bernini’s treatment of Pluto and Proserpina. In typical Baroque manner, we seem to be the direct witnesses of a dramatic scene happening in front of our very own eyes. The putti are semi-hidden in the midst of a luxuriant display of acanthus leaves. Perfect to be placed on a wall to receive any decorative object of your liking, this 1800s French shelf will bring an elegant touch to any décor.
