This finely carved mirror has a rectangular mirror plate within a harebell running border surmounted by a finely carved fronded acanthus cresting with two expressive putti figures symbolizing spring and autumn above an armorial cartouche. The mirror frame is carved to the upper angles with fleshy scrolling acanthus and with putti figures symbolizing summer and winter to the lower angles, the scrolling acanthus apron is centred by a female mask.
The exuberance of the design with richly carved foliate scrolls and lively handling of the putti figures is typical of the northern Italian school of carving and places this mirror in the grand historical tradition of master carvers of the Baroque such as Felippo Passarini.
North Italy, circa 1860.
