Small side trestle table hand-made in Italy using walnut in the early 1700s. This table is a sturdy piece softened by beautiful carvings and packs a lot of character is a small package.
The top features an inset board framed on four sides, and is decorated by a rectangular carved motif, which is repeated on the apron. The two legs are connected by an h-stretcher and all of these elements are decorated by carving. As a nice juxtaposition to the rather simple and straight-lined top, the legs of the table have rounded sides and end in large scalloped feet. Additionally, depth is provided to the legs by the fluting on the top, the acanthus leaves on the edges, a cartouche on the center, and beading on bottom. The beading motif is repeated on the top and bottom edges of the stretcher, where the year 1462 is also carved in roman number. We do not think this carving is original to the time the piece was built, but may have been done to mark an important date for the family represented in the coat of arms carved on the legs.
