On offer here, is an exquisite piece of history—an antique gateleg or dropleaf table originating from Spain, dating back to the late 17th century, circa 1680. This remarkable table is crafted from solid chestnut wood, boasting a stunning grain pattern that showcases the true beauty of the timber.
The table features two foldable half-moon leaves, each made from a single plank measuring 1 inch thick. The wood grain on these leaves is truly exceptional, adding to the table’s character. Supported by four elegantly turned bobbin legs, this table is a true testament to the craftsmanship of its time.
What sets this table apart is its unique design. Two of the legs are split lengthwise, allowing them to unfold and provide support for the leaf when in use. The hinges, hand-forged and original to the table, add to its authenticity and charm. Furthermore, a narrow drawer with a beautifully crafted drop-shaped pull is incorporated into the apron of the table.
Having gracefully withstood the test of time, this table carries nearly 350 years of history. As a result, it bears the marks of its past, adding to its character and authenticity. The stretchers that connect the legs exhibit charming signs of wear, and the tabletop proudly displays various signs of use, including a burn mark along its edge.
When closed, the table measures 41.34 inches in width, 33.46 inches in depth, and 30.31 inches in height. Once fully extended, the leaf takes on an organic oval shape, extending the length to an impressive 61.42 inches. The dark brown finish exudes a deep luster, showcasing a beautiful patina that has developed over many years of use.
The table was gently cleaned in our atelier and a new protective wax coat was applied. The table has a comfortable modern height and can be used as a dining table. The piece is ready for use.
