This Sanguine drawing is in good condition. Small dark brown spots are visible around the edges of the sheet.
This drawing from the end of the 1600s it could be attributed to the Bolognese school and most likely is a preparatory sketch for an large oil painting.
The artists, contrary to how they were presented to us in the romantic representations with the artist equipped with an easel, canvases, colors and brushes, depicting scenes of daily life, landscapes and still life. They actually used to draw their subjects first on paper and once back in the studio they made their paintings inspired by their drawings.
